    I Hearken & Whisper

    Alto flute | Jennie LIN

The word 'ear' appears 64 times in the Bible. In a world filled with clamor and the incessant rush of life, it is only by inclining one's ear that one can discern those genuine, faint whispers. 'He conceals what is to be concealed,' and His people are tasked with unraveling these hidden mysteries. When uncovered, these secrets transform lives irrevocably.
Tonight's first stage, set where the performers are unseen by the audience, will be located in the towering prayer tower of Jiaoxi Church, a structure symbolic of the celestial bodies of the universe. In this setting, musicians will perform selections from the ancient psalms of Hildegard von Bingen, using a medieval monophonic chant style. This performance, designed to be a 'soft voice' audible only to those who 'listen attentively,' promises a uniquely profound experience.

I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. 61:4

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall recompense thee. Matthew 6:6

    II Ark & Narrow Gate〈Herald the Journey’s Commencement〉

    Shofar | Chu-You LIN、Violin | Yu-Chin HUANG

From the perspective of ancient Jewish culture, the Shofar, an instrument, originally signifies 'ram's horn'. Commonly made from the horns of antelopes, goats, and sheep, this instrument is mentioned in over 80 instances in the Bible, first appearing in Exodus, where the presence of God descends with the sound of the horn. The most frequently mentioned Shofar in the Bible is likely the goat horn, known for its portability. It serves as a reminder for silence and focus, symbolizing gathering, proclamation, alertness, divine presence, and celebration. Tonight, the second act will commence with the distant sound of the Shofar.

Renowned as the American Poet Laureate, Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), a four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, penned profound meanings in his work "The Road Not Taken". The last lines, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference." strikingly echo the Biblical passage, "But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." The performance, set beneath a wall inscribed with "Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life," guides the audience through the narrow gate into a soaring structure reminiscent of Noah's Ark.

And when the sound of the horn became louder and louder, Moses' words were answered by the voice of God. Exodus 19:19

For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few be they that find it. Matthew 7:14

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life…John 14:6

A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shalt thou finish it upward; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. Genesis 6:16

Join us in a journey into the realm of 'Free Improvisation', reminiscent of the Biblical 'In the beginning' from Genesis. Improvisation is an innate human gift and the genesis of music itself. The earliest forms of music, including the shouts and percussive sounds of primitive societies, were improvisational in nature.

Since the Middle Ages, or even earlier, due to the imprecise notation systems, performers and singers had considerable freedom in their interpretation. The Renaissance saw the emergence of polyphonic compositions where a fixed melody, or 'cantus firmus', was woven with counterpoints in an improvisational manner.

The 17th-century Baroque era introduced a pivotal stylistic element - the Basso Continuo or Figured Bass. This numerical representation of chord structures allowed musicians to improvise freely, with masters like J.S. Bach, who dedicated his life to church music, excelling in this art.

The 18th century brought improvisation to classical concertos through the elaborate cadenzas, while the 19th century seemed quieter in terms of improvisation. However, the 20th century witnessed a resurgence, spearheaded by musicians like John Cage. This 'chance music', free from the constraints of traditional tonal music theory, allowed performers to select materials at random, creating a unique performance aspect. This approach is also evident in the captivating improvisations of contemporary jazz.

Today's performance of 'Free Improvisation' has its roots in the late 1960s European scene, influenced by British improviser and composer Fred Frith (b.1949). Violinist Huang Yu-Chin, a pupil of Fred Frith, along with the students and faculty of the Taipei National University of the Arts' MIT-Xtyle Orchestra, draws inspiration from the biblical account of creation in Genesis. They attempt to break free from modal music concepts, crafting new sounds through timbre, melody, rhythm, and interactions between performers, using instruments and voices, all unrestrained by conventional frameworks.

At the first God made the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1

And the earth was waste and without form; and it was dark on the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God was moving on the face of the waters.Genesis 1:2

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.Genesis 1:3
And on the seventh day God came to the end of all his work; and on the seventh day he took his rest from all the work which he had done. Genesis 2:2

(Rather burn out, than rust out)永遠被記念。

Even today, traveling alone by boat to a distant island presents a challenge, let alone 150 years ago, in an era devoid of satellite navigation and communication technology. George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901), a Canadian missionary of the Presbyterian Church , commonly known as 'Dr. Mackay' or 'Pastor Mackay', had a profound impact on Taiwan in terms of mission work, healthcare, and education, becoming an inseparable part of its history.

It is hard to imagine the emotions of Mackay, then just 28, as he journeyed from Canada across the seas to set foot on Taiwan. In his own words, he felt 'an invisible cord pulling me to Formosa - the Beautiful Isle.' Despite facing hostility due to differences in appearance, language, and customs, and enduring threats from mobs and physical assaults, he persevered in traveling across Taiwan on foot. Using Tamsui as his base, he traversed the regions of Miaoli, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung, continuously practicing medicine and preaching. Remarkably, he is recorded to have extracted over 21,000 teeth in Taiwan.

Beyond his medical contributions, Mackay's legacy extends to education and evangelism. In 1878, he married Chang Tsung-Ming, nicknamed 'Tsung Ai,' and continued his dedication to education and the spread of the gospel. For instance, in 1884, he established the Tamsui Girls' School (now Tamkang Senior High School), offering tuition-free education to encourage women, who had limited educational opportunities at the time, many of whom were from the Kavalan Plains Indigenous People of Yilan. Lesser known is his role in improving Taiwan's agriculture. He introduced seeds for now-common vegetables like radishes, cabbage, tomatoes, mung beans, cauliflower, carrots, Korean cabbage, beets, and celery.

Dr. Mackay devoted his life to Taiwan, immortalized by his famous saying, 'Rather burn out, than rust out.' 'This is the Land' is a poem penned by Dr. Mackay himself, reflecting his calling and deep affection for Taiwan, the Formosa Isle.'

I heard the voice of God whisper to my listening spirit.
This is the land. This is the land.
So beautiful! So good! That God gives me.
I have decided to settle in North Formosa.

Today's choir performance features an arrangement by the late Professor Kuo Nai-Chun. Professor Kuo, who tirelessly contributed to Christian music research and education, served as the head of various departments at St. John's University, including Information Management, Mass Communication, Applied Arts, and the MBA program in Christian Management. We are grateful to the project consultant, Professor Gee-Chin HOU, for the recommendation and to Mrs. Yang Li-Hsien Kuo for granting permission to use this arrangement.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalms1:3

And the voice of the Lord came to my ears, saying, Whom am I to send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I, send me. Isaiah 6:8

Have you ever asked yourself, 'What is the purpose of life?' If life is a marathon, do you know where the direction you are running towards will lead you? The term 'calling' appears 472 times in the Bible, signifying selection, appointment, and entrustment with special missions. Examples include Noah, who was commanded by God to build an ark; the shepherd boy David; the young Samuel; Queen Esther; and even Jesus, who prayed, 'Not my will, but thine, be done.' (Luke 22:42).

Regarded as the father of music, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was relatively unknown during his lifetime. However, he had a clear calling: to create music for the church. In his 65-year composing career, he wrote 1,120 works. Among these, about 650 were hymns for the Lutheran worship choir, including more than 200 church cantatas and other major religious music pieces that remain significant treasures for all humanity. Today's performance includes selections from Bach's church cantata 'Ich habe genug.'

In the Bible, the Greek word for 'church' refers to 'a group of people who are called out.' Just as Dr. George Leslie Mackay answered the call to bring the gospel to Taiwan 150 years ago, leaving a profound impact in Yilan. The Jiaoxi Church, with a history of over a hundred years, has seen generations of venerable predecessors write moving stories of life and faith here.

Today's performance by the Jiaoxi Church Choir features two choral pieces, 'Jiaoxi Church - God's Church' and 'Clouds,' composed by Pan Hsin-Yi, a member of the Jiaoxi Church.

They are accompanied by photographs of the church building provided by Jiaoxi Church and motion pictures of the sunrise of the Guishan Island taken by the memorable Elder Tsan-Hsin WU. He was an early photographer who documented significant performances at TNUA and played a vital role in connecting Jennie Lin with her hometown church, Jiaoxi Church.

Following is Psalm 23, one of the most beloved chapters in the Bible.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

David, drawing from his experience as a shepherd, uses it as a metaphor for God's care for us, akin to a shepherd's for his sheep. "The recording of the beloved late elder A-Lan HUANG HSU echoes in the ancient hymnal style of the alto flute, resonating from a distance.

And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.Matthew 16:18

Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1

    Life Exploration Cards
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:Matthew 7:7

Is life challenging? Have you ever questioned the meaning of existence? Especially when confronted with difficulties, obstacles, or setbacks. Or perhaps your life is effortless, yet you are uncertain where your complete dedication is taking you. Maybe you are excessively worried about others' perceptions, continuously striving for flawlessness, but never genuinely discovering tranquility, joy, and contentment. These verses and expressions, extracted from the Bible, have accompanied numerous Christians for generations. Whether on the mountaintops or in the valleys, through perfection or imperfection, an unwavering and authentic love has always been present. It patiently awaits those who seek it, with the assurance that those who search will undoubtedly discover it.

    Black Stone Heart Artwork
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26

The Chinese idiom "iron stone heart" (鐵石心腸) refers to an individual with a heart of steel and stone, indicating the absence of empathy and a stubborn disposition. This idea shares an intriguing resemblance to the biblical metaphor of a "heart of stone." In Hebrew, the word "stone" (אבן, eben) and "son" (בן, ben) create a wordplay, enabling one to interpret a stone as a symbol of a person. What kind of person? The Bible describes different types of stones, such as rocks, cornerstones, and stumbling blocks. The small black stones currently on display at Jiaoxi Church were made by Sunday School children, who painted each one with a gentle heart. These stones are meant to be taken as souvenirs, symbolizing genuine blessings and changing the metaphor of a cold heart to one of kindness and affection.

    The Kite Project
This project aims to connect Christians worldwide who wish to record the Lord's Prayer in their own language. It aims to support and encourage artists who are using their professional talents to share the Lord's Prayer. The participants have also agreed to allow their voices to be used in an artistic performance. We collected nearly 100 sound files in about a month. They came from five different nations and were in over 12 languages. Some of the participants chose to identify themselves, while others chose to remain anonymous. To create this unique sound installation, we edited and combined all the recorded audio files. We are grateful to all the prayerful contributors, known and unknown, who transcended time and space to accompany us on the long journey of artistic creation. The Kite Project is ongoing and will be further developed.

The "Suite of the Wind" was completed in 2019 and premiered at the Latin American Flute Festival in Lima, Peru. It comprises the following five sections:

    1.The Palette of the Sky
In the stillness before dawn, the sea unfolds a canvas of blue-black sky, where clusters of stars shimmer, dreamlike and ethereal. I, a mere speck in the grand scheme, stand gazing up at the boundless firmament, my heart brimming with awe and contemplation for the profound mysteries of the universe.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years:Genesis 1:14

    2.Flying Kites

Like a kite dancing lightly in the wind, the melody embodies the youthful spirit, aspiring to greater heights. However, the journey to finding our true place is guided by an invisible tether, regardless of how far we soar.

If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Thy hand shall lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139:8-10

    3.The Waltz of Shadows

This is a song of comfort and longing, beginning with a slow, flowing melody that carries deep emotions and an ineffable sense of solitude. Each step in the relentless search adds weight to the feeling of missing. The middle section's faster tempo is not just a joyful twirl; it also bears the nostalgic reminiscences of life's splendid moments. Yet, in the hourglass of time, it all seems like a void, until the search leads to the discovery of eternal significance.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

    4.The Girl from Formosa

This composition cleverly integrates the chords of "The Girl from Ipanema" as a tribute to Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), the father of Bossa Nova music. In its middle section, the piece improvises with elements of the traditional 'Diu Diu Dang' melody from Yilan, Taiwan. The result is a skillful fusion of diverse aesthetic elements, weaving a rich and vibrant musical tapestry.

    5.Footprints in the Sand(主堂-小提琴 / 音效)

This musical piece is inspired by the true story of a Christian. "In my dream, I walked with the Lord, but at the lowest point of my life, there was only one set of footprints on the sand. I thought the Lord had left me, but He replied: 'My dear child, I never left you during your trials. The single set of footprints you see is where I carried you.'" This composition also commemorates the composer's profound journey of life and faith.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.Deuteronomy 31:6
